Davide Ancelotti Rangers 'nepotism' concern raised amid 'punt' claim

Simon Jordan has raised concerns about Rangers' potential appointment of Davide Ancelotti.

The Italian, son of legendary Real Madrid manager Carlo, has emerged as a candidate for the permanent Ibrox hotseat over the past 24 hours.

Although his credentials of being a top-level coach are apparent, Jordan has some concerns [talkSport]: "If you look at the career of this young man, I'm not doubting you can come from a background of a personal fitness trainer," he said.

"But there is an element of there's a lot of nepotism going on here, there are a lot of jobs going to this young man as a result of his father's credentials.

"If I am Rangers, and I haven't interviewed the fella, I don't know how charismatic he is and what his credentials are.

"We have seen people who have been given really significant responsibilities, Paul Clement, he's a great coach, he's worked under great management at big football clubs.

"Stick him in the dugout as a manager, not so much.

"Rangers, why would you take this punt?

"Unless he is so impressive, and I do believe that the only subscription you have to anything is the credentials of what he did previously.

"But we had this ridiculous conversation last year when it came up, if you've got the owner of a club, like the Plymouth guy, telling us the Wayne Rooney appointment was based on none of his credentials, what he'd done in the past was of no interest to them.

"I don't understand the first time appointment, you take a risk, but this is Rangers, and all of the challenges Rangers have brought them to this point, where the board is in disarray, the ownership is changing, expectations of the club must be rising.

"Surely you have got to parachute in somebody that is going to go, 'see that other fella over there in the [Celtic] dugout, I can deal with him, as long as you give me some resources, I can match him, close for pound to pound, and I can get you where you need to be'.

"Can they really, unequivocally say, somebody who has been in his father's shadow, got appointments off his father's credentials has the chops to manage a club like Rangers?

"I have to debate that."

Barry Ferguson will remain in interim charge of Rangers until the end of the season. The club are looking to appoint a permanent successor to Philippe Clement in the next four weeks.
