Daily Covid-19 cases climb above 11,000 in Pune Metropolitan Region; eight more dead

PUNE: The number of daily Covid-19 cases increased to 11,748 in the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) on Tuesday, its highest single-day patient tally since April 29 last year when 11,872 people had tested positive.

The Tuesday’s case rise follows Monday’s detection drop, a trend which is often attributed to fewer tests during the weekend. However, less number of tests were carried out in PMR on Tuesday as compared to the previous day, but the cases still jumped, which can be due to pending test reports, a health official said.

Barring Monday, the cases remained above 10,000 for three days till Sunday, data provided by the district health officer, Bhagwan Pawar, showed.

Among the new cases, the Pune municipal limits added 6,320, followed by the Pimpri Chinchwad areas (3,159) and the rural as well as cantonment areas (2,269). With this, PMR’s caseload has risen above 12.69 lakh. As for recoveries, PMR recorded as many as 6,075 discharges on Tuesday, including 3,380 from the PMC limits, 1,712 from the PCMC areas and 982 from the rural and cantonment areas. So far, more than 11.81 lakh people have been discharged in PMR after successfully recovery.

As many as 31,580 samples were checked in the region on Tuesday. The day’s positivity rate stood at 37% in PMR on Tuesday.

The region’s count of active patients further increased to 68,834 on Tuesday evening. Of these, as many as 66,317 patients were in home isolation.

Eight more patients succumbed to infection in the region on Tuesday.
