Cumnock care home's improvements are noted in follow-up inspection report

An Ayrshire nursing home which was previously told to improve its infection control practices has been given the thumbs up by an official watchdog.

Top brass at Bute House care home, in Cumnock’s Barrhill Terrace, were told to make the improvements by Saturday, January 15, following an unannounced inspection in December by the Care Inspectorate.

The scrutiny body previously expressed concerns over the home’s care and support of residents during the Covid pandemic.

However, in the wake of a follow-up inspection, the Care Inspectorate saw a number of changes take place “within timescales.”

An extract from the latest report said the follow-up visit was a “focused one” to report on the progress of one previous requirement made back in December.

The report goes on: “It is important that equipment and the environment are clean to reduce the risk of infection.

“We saw improved documentation in relation to the cleaning of the environment. This included newly-implemented bedroom checklists which included mattresses and soft furnishings. This documentation included each area of the care home.”

Management overview of the care home had also improved, according to the Care Inspectorate, with the report noting: “We saw improved management overview within the care home.

“The service had introduced new audit tools to supplement existing tools.

“Having environmental audits give clear oversight to the management team. This meant those living in the care home could be assured that the environment was clean and protected individuals from the risk of infection.”

Bute House care home is registered to provide nursing care and support for up to 45 older people.

The provider is Harveys Healthcare (Scotland) Ltd and the service registered with the Care Inspectorate in 2020.
