American actor Constance Wu has revealed social media backlash and "internet shaming" almost caused her to take her own life.

Wu, who starred in Hollywood films Crazy Rich Asians and Hustlers, said a Twitter backlash to comments she made in 2019 left her "feeling like I didn't even deserve to live anymore".

"Looking back, it's surreal that a few DMs convinced me to end my own life, but that's what happened," she wrote on Twitter.

"Luckily a friend found me and rushed me to the ER."

Her 2019 comments, which she described as "careless", came after a sitcom she starred in, Fresh Off the Boat, was renewed for another season.

When one Twitter user called that "great news" she had replied: "No, it's not."

Her latest comments were her first on social media for almost three years.

"I felt awful about what I'd said, and when a few DMs [direct messages] from a fellow Asian actress told me I'd become a blight on the Asian American community, I started feeling like I didn't deserve to live anymore.

"That I was a disgrace to AsAms, and they'd be better off without me."

She added the incident had caused her to "reassess a lot" and put her acting career on hold to focus on her mental health.

"While [Asian Americans] are quick to celebrate representation wins, there's a lot of avoidance around the more uncomfortable issues within our community," she said.

"Even my tweets became a subject so touchy that most of my AsAm colleagues decided that was the time to avoid me or ice me out.

"I'll admit it hurt a lot, but it also made me realise how important it is to reach out and care for people who are going through a hard time.

"After a little break from Hollywood and a lot of therapy I feel okay enough to venture back on here (at least for a little bit).

"And even though I'm scared, I've decided that I owe it to the me-of-three-years-ago to be brave and share my story so that it might help someone with theirs."

She then went on to star in 2018 romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians.

She was the first Asian woman in more than 40 years to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her Crazy Rich Asians role.

She also received Screen Actors Guild Award, Satellite Award, and Critics' Choice Award nominations for the film.

She starred alongside Jennifer Lopez in the 2019 crime drama Hustlers.

After only a handful of guest and voice roles in the last year, she stars alongside actor Chris Pratt in the Amazon action series The Terminal List, which debuted this month.
