Commanders hosted a pair of defenders on top 30 visits

The Washington Commanders continue to host defensive players on some of their top 30 visits. After hosting star Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton earlier this week, the Commanders were busy hosting a pair of defensive linemen.

According to Ben Standig of The Athletic, the Commanders hosted Texas A&M edge rusher Michael Clemson and Oklahoma defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey recently.

The Commanders are doing their diligence on defensive linemen after losing two key backups at defensive tackle in Matt Ioannidis and Tim Settle. Washington has outstanding starters in Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne but virtually no depth behind them.

Winfrey is expected to go sometime on day two. The Senior Bowl MVP had a terrific senior season for the Sooners, recording 11 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. If Washington selected Winfrey, he’d likely be a potential replacement for Payne if the former first-round pick isn’t re-signed after the 2022 season.

Clemons was productive for the Aggies the last two seasons, recording 15.5 tackles for loss and 11 sacks since 2020. He’d provide depth behind Chase Young and Montez Sweat, along with free-agent signee Efe Obada and James Smith-Williams.

The Commanders are clearly looking for defensive line depth in this draft and don’t be surprised if they take one earlier than fans anticipate.
