Colts’ Shaquille Leonard ‘progressing well’ but without timetable

The update on the status of Indianapolis Colts linebacker Shaquille Leonard was that there was no update.

At least, it was nothing tangible.

While Leonard continues to work his way back from the second surgery in hopes of correcting a nerve issue in his back, he hasn’t participated yet in the offseason workout program.

Head coach Shane Steichen provided a non-update of The Maniac’s status following the conclusion of the first week of OTAs.

“He’s progressing well. Again, I don’t have a timetable right now for you on that, but he’s progressing well. He’s doing a nice job,” Steichen told reporters Thursday.

Leonard initially had surgery last offseason, which forced him to miss training camp and the preseason. He missed the first three games of the regular season but suffered a broken nose and concussion during his debut, keeping him off the field for another three weeks.

When he returned from that, Leonard still didn’t look like himself. It wasn’t until interim head coach Jeff Saturday suggested he shut everything down that Leonard had a second surgery.

He told reporters during the spring that he feels much better about his prognosis, but there still isn’t a clear timetable for his return.

“I’m feeling better. Feeling a whole lot better than what I did at any point of the year last year. Moving around a whole lot better, I’ve got more power in the calf. It’s still not where I want to be,” Leonard said in April.

It’s more likely the Colts take the cautious approach with their star linebacker so there’s a strong chance we don’t see Leonard until the team returns for training camp at the end of July.

Even then, it’s best to keep expectations low about his potential timetable for return until we get a clear update.
