Cody Gakpo names the 'real leader' of the Liverpool strikeforce

Cody Gakpo has praised Mohamed Salah as the "real leader" of the Liverpool forward line.

The duo have struck up an excellent partnership since Gakpo arrived at Anfield from PSV Eindhoven during the January transfer window.

Both players were integral to Liverpool winning seven of their last 10 matches to qualify for the Europa League.

Gakpo finished his first half-season with the Reds with seven goals to his name while for Salah it was another campaign in which he broke the 30-goal barrier.

And Gakpo told The Mirror: "At Liverpool, there is someone running the attack called Mo Salah. I can’t speak highly enough about Mo.

"All the things he has produced on the pitch as a forward and the way he has been performing at top level for so many years is so impressive.

"That is why I see this man as the real leader of our forward line."

The Reds' non-international players will resume training on July 8. But for those players representing their country this summer, including Gakpo, they will return three days later on July 11.

Gakpo has been named in the Netherlands' starting line-up along with Liverpool team-mate Virgil van Dijk for this afternoon's UEFA Nations League third place play-off against Italy.

The Dutch missed out on a place in this evening's final after they were beaten 4-2 after extra-time by Croatia, will now face Spain in the decider.

Meanwhile, Salah has been rested along with five other Egypt players for their friendly against South Sudan tonight. It comes after Egypt booked their place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast with a 2-1 win over Guinea in midweek.
