Cod's Scallops owner John Molnar to cook fish and chips on Saturday Kitchen Live

Nottingham's very own 'Codfather' will be showing how to cook the perfect fish and chips live on TV this weekend. John Molnar, the boss of the Cod's Scallops chain of chippies, will appear on BBC's Saturday Kitchen on Saturday, May 28.

He will be cooking traditional deep-fried battered fish and chips and oven-baked hake on the show hosted by Matt Tebbutt. "This is my first live cooking demo. I haven't slept since Wednesday. I'm nervous, I'm excited, anything could happen.

"I could cut my finger, oil could go everywhere or I could get verbal diarrhoea. It's only six minutes. I might hate it or I might love it but it's great to get a local business on national TV," said John, who runs chippies in Wollaton, Carrington, Long Eaton, Market Harborough, Harborne and the newly-opened restaurant and takeaway at Wilford Lane Retail Park in West Bridgford.

His cooking stint is in celebration of today's National Fish and Chip Day. Trying to recreate chip shop-style battered fish and chips at home isn't easy, said John.

"If you've got a domestic deep fat fryer it's nigh-on impossible to get all the components cooked at the same time especially if there's four of you. Most takeaways you can recreate at home but battered fish and chips isn't one of them which is great from a takeaway point of view."

He's not the only Nottingham food hero on the telly on Saturday. Two Michelin-starred chef Sat Bains will feature on James Martin's Saturday Morning on ITV. John said: "He's laughing as it's pre-recorded. He's a seasoned pro. This is my debut."

It's the 200th Saturday Morning show, and comedian Johnny Vegas will be one of the guests. Sat said: "It's great for Notts."
