‘Coach owes you a new bag and shirt’: Woman walks around NYC during heat wave with her new Coach bag. She instantly regrets it

One woman’s experience walking around New York in 99-degree weather has people chuckling and saying Coach owes her a new bag and shirt.

Why would Coach owe her?

In a viral video, Kai Aaliyah (@kaileeaaliyah) writes in an on-screen caption, “It’s so hot in nyc that my bag melted onto my shirt.” She then demonstrates this by attempting to remove the bag from her shoulder and showing the strap sticking to her white tee, refusing to come off. To make matters worse, the strap left a huge stain.

‘This is actually frying me’

Commenters had hilarious responses to her situation.

“That’s the anti theft feature,” one wrote. Similarly, a second said, “Imagine a thief tryna take it from you and you’re just dragging along with the bag.”

“My Walmart birkin would never,” a third said, referencing the viral $80 Hermès dupe. In the same vein, another wrote, “My SHEIN bag would never do me like that.”

Some commenters offered to help Aaliyah.

Detergent brand Tide commented, “We got you girl.”

The City University of New York wrote, “We’ll get you a new bag.”

Does real leather melt like this?

In the comments section, several viewers said they had never seen something like that before. Others noted it’s not the first time a customer has gone viral for a melting bag.

“Not too much on Coach. A lady said her Goyard bag did that too,” one commenter wrote.

Another woman shared the same issue with her Loungefly bag. The company makes pop-culture-inspired bags that are popular with fans of Disney Parks. However, the customer who went viral says her bag couldn’t stand up to the Orlando, Florida, heat, raising quality concerns considering the bags’ relatively high price tag.

A commenter on Aaliyah’s video also had quality concerns. “Real leather dont do dat,” they wrote. Are they right?

Yes, it seems they are correct. Rather than melting in the sun, real leather reacts much the way human skin does.

Yukon Bags notes, “If you spend too much time in the sun your skin will darken, dry out and crack and just not be very healthy. Leather will also become discolored, dry out and crack if left out in the sun. It will prematurely age your leather and affect its softness and strength.”

This doesn’t mean you can never have your leather bags in the sun. It just means you shouldn’t leave them out for extended periods of time. “Also, you can help prevent sun damage to your leather goods by conditioning them regularly,” Yukon states.

Wait, I totally thought Coach, Goyard, and Loungefly were real leather?

Generally, Coach and Goyard bags are made of real leather, depending on the style. Loungefly bags, however, are not.

If the first two brands use real leather, why did the straps melt? It’s possible that the straps were coated in a material that’s susceptible to melting after prolonged exposure to sunlight.

While it does not specifically mention melting, Goyard warns customers to protect their bags from “prolonged exposure to light either artificial or natural, as well as extreme temperatures” on its website
