Woman claims she left baked Walmart chicken on the counter for six months. Then she looked inside the Ziploc bag: ‘For entertainment purposes only’

A TikTok creator has gone viral after claiming she left cooked Walmart chicken sitting on her kitchen counter for six months without refrigeration, then opened the bag to show viewers what it looked like. The video, posted by Aviandhope (@aviandhope) in July 2026, has drawn millions of views and sparked debate over food safety, preservatives, and whether cooked meat dries out instead of visibly rotting.

In the clip, Aviandhope holds up a sealed plastic bag containing what appears to be cooked chicken breast, as the text overlay reads, “Meat in America is Fake!” “Hey, you wanna see something absolutely disgusting? This chicken is 6 months old.” Aviandhope said.

She then explained that she purchased a package of Walmart chicken breast after returning from India earlier this year. “I baked it in the oven, and I put it in this Ziploc bag, and I have left it on my counter,” she said.

The chicken appeared unspoiled, and commenters offered possible explanations

“Since this has been on the counter for six months, it has not rotted; it has not molded. And I’m gonna keep it. And I’m gonna see how long it takes for this to change, if it ever changes,” Aviandhope then said in her post.

She then breaks off a piece of the chicken on camera. “Let me break a little piece off for y’all. Break it in half. Six months old. Do that information what you will. Six months old. Six. Half a year.” She mentions she bought it from Walmart in the comments section. She cheekily captions the video “For entertainment purposes only.”

The phenomenon seen here is likely a classic example of desiccation. Like the famous “immortal McDonald’s burger” experiments, if food loses moisture faster than bacteria can proliferate, it effectively dehydrates into meat jerky rather than rotting.

Even still, the video prompted thousands of comments offering competing explanations for what viewers were seeing. One commenter identifying themselves as a principal engineer argued that preservatives were not necessarily responsible.

The commenter claimed that cooking food until its internal temperature exceeds 160 degrees Fahrenheit eliminates bacteria, germs, viruses, and parasites. As a result, they claimed the food could remain intact if stored in a partially sealed plastic bag because no active bacteria or mold spores would remain.

But while cooking poultry to a safe internal temperature destroys disease-causing bacteria present at that time, food safety experts say that does not make cooked food shelf-stable. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service says cooked food should not remain at room temperature for more than two hours because bacteria from the surrounding environment can contaminate it after cooking.

The agency recommends refrigerating leftovers promptly. It also recommends disposing of perishable foods left out longer than that.

Another viewer blamed preservatives instead. “I’m sure under a microscope you’d see a ridiculous amount of bacteria.” Raw chicken sold in the United States does not typically contain added chemical preservatives. Fresh poultry products instead rely on refrigeration throughout processing and distribution to slow bacterial growth.

But the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service explains that fresh chicken remains highly perishable and requires proper refrigeration. Food scientists also note that visible mold is not the only indicator of spoilage.

Bacteria that cause foodborne illness often cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises consumers not to judge food safety by appearance alone because dangerous pathogens may still be present.

The TikTok video does not verify the chicken’s age or storage conditions beyond the creator’s statements. While the lack of obvious mold surprised many viewers, food safety guidance continues to recommend refrigerating cooked poultry promptly and avoiding consumption of meat that has remained at room temperature for extended periods.
