'Number of arrests' made following climate protest at Grangemouth oil refinery

POLICE Scotland has confirmed that a "number of arrests" have been made after anti-oil and gas protesters blocked the access roads to Scotland's only oil refinery by sticking themselves to the ground.

This Is Rigged posted a video on their Twitter with the caption: “Six people are currently concreted and glued to the single access road to INEOS Grangemouth oil terminal.”

The group added: "No fuel can enter or exit the Grangemouth oil terminal, which supplies 70% of Scotland's fuel, while they remain on the road."

Jamie, a 25-year-old student among those to take action, said: "We can no longer stand by while we head into a climate disaster. We must put an end to the growth of oil and gas to secure a safe future for everyone and not just line the pockets of the rich."

It’s the second week in the row that protesters have sought to disrupt production at the facility with the group saying last week that it wanted to “shut down Scotland’s fuel supplies”.

A spokesperson for Ineos said: "We can confirm there is ongoing protester activity on a public road, near the Grangemouth site. Police Scotland are managing the protest."

The group has also demanded the Scottish Government vocally oppose new licences for fossil fuel developments "and create a fair and fully funded transition for oil workers".

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "We are aware of protesters at the Ineos site in Grangemouth.

"A number of arrests have been made and officers remain in attendance."
