Bobby Berk Says 'the Billy Bookcase Is Overrated' – He Prefers These Designer-Looking IKEA Icons Instead

Bobby Berk.

Even the most recognizable design icons have their limits. For decades, the IKEA BILLY bookcase has been a cult-favorite presence in homes, yet interior designer Bobby Berk has put the classic on his 'skip list'.

While flat-pack storage serves a practical purpose, Bobby has suggested that overly familiar staples can easily flatten a room, depriving a space of character and depth.

In a recent edit published on his blog, the Queer Eye designer said that creating a sophisticated home requires looking past viral trends. Rather than relying on conventional favorites, Bobby highlights the IKEA pieces that will not date – offering tactile richness and tailored silhouettes. His top picks include the DEJSA Table Lamp and FRÖSET Chair, both of which are available at IKEA. They're among the best IKEA pieces that look so much more expensive than they are.

Ahead – nine Bobby-approved IKEA finds that he wants you to bring home.

Crushed linen

Window treatments set the atmospheric tone of a space. Bobby favors these 100 percent linen drapes for their effortless drape and tactile beauty. They introduce a soft, understated richness to living spaces without appearing overly tailored or rigid.

Opal glass

Lighting should always double as art. Featuring a nickel-plated base and a handblown glass shade, this table lamp offers a soft, diffused glow and a sleek silhouette reminiscent of high-end architectural fixtures.

Moon-shaped

Pairing a solid wood frame with a supple leather cushion, this seat bridges the gap between relaxed comfort and formal structure. Its enduring materials ensure it develops a beautiful patina over time.

Scandinavian lines

Defined by its sculptural bent oak veneer, this low-slung accent chair serves as an architectural statement piece. Bobby champions its ergonomic form, proving that mass-market design can still feel entirely bespoke.

Handwoven rattan

I'll always favor a rattan chair when I see it listed, and I'm in good company (thanks Bobby). Blending woven rattan with slender metal legs, this one brings subtle texture into modern living rooms. It pairs seamlessly with coastal and Scandinavian aesthetics, naturally.

Rustic expression

Don't underestimate IKEA's dinnerware. Boasting a rich brown glaze and a subtly irregular silhouette, these ceramics carry an artisanal, handcrafted appeal. They bring a grounded quality to kitchen styling or open shelving.

Artisanal touch

Versatility meets refined design in this minimalist bench. Finished with a sleek leather cushion, it functions beautifully in an entryway, at the foot of a bed, or as an unexpected coffee table alternative.

Flatwoven

A jute rug is a classic for a reason. In this pick, natural fiber floor coverings remain a cornerstone of elevated interior design. It anchors a room with organic texture, creating a warm foundation for tailored furniture arrangements.

Oak effect

Unlike basic flat picture frames, the deep shadowbox profile of this collection adds subtle depth to artwork and photography, giving gallery walls a custom, professional finish.
