Celtic secure player on long-term contract as they fend off mouth-watering Premier League interest

Celtic have fended off English Premier League interest to sign East Kilbride's Daniel Kelly on a professional deal.

The teenager has impressed in the Hoops youth ranks and has featured for their Lowland League 'B' team this season.

His potential has alerted others to his services, with Arsenal and Liverpool both reported to have been keen on taking Kelly down south.

Portuguese giants Benfica were also interested in the 16-year-old playmaker but Celtic have managed to avoid a repeat of their Ben Doak situation, who is close to a move to Liverpool.

Kelly - whose godfather is Parkhead hero Scott McDonald - has committed to the Premiership side on a long-term deal until 2025.

He joins a growing list of Lanarkshire players at the Glasgow side, including David Turnbull, Stephen Welsh and Rocco Vata.

A club statement reads: "Celtic FC is delighted to announce that it has completed the signing of Daniel Kelly on his first professional contract.

"Daniel has joined on a three year contract. Everyone at the Club wishes Daniel well and every success for his future with Celtic."
