Catarina Bento Is Creating a New Way to Learn Portuguese Through Culture, Community, and Applied Understanding

For Catarina Bento, language learning is not a matter of memorizing vocabulary lists or repeating isolated phrases. Instead, it is an exercise in understanding how people think, communicate, and connect. As a linguistic coach and resource creator based in Lisbon, Bento has developed an approach that reflects both her personal experiences and a broader perspective on how adults learn languages in practical, real-world contexts.

Born and raised in Lisbon, Bento explains her early academic experience as relatively smooth until adulthood introduced new challenges. She explains that her experience with ADHD began to shape how she approached learning more intentionally, ultimately influencing her professional path. "ADHD is often seen as a limitation, but I see it as a superpower when it is placed in the right environment, because it allows you to learn deeply and connect ideas in ways that are not always linear," she says. "This perspective became foundational to my work."

Her career did not begin in language education. With a background in culinary arts and a bachelor's degree in food production, Bento initially worked in environments that required constant interaction with international teams. According to her, these experiences made language less of an academic subject and more of a necessity. "I needed to communicate with people from different countries in fast-paced environments, so learning languages became practical rather than theoretical," she explains. "This exposure sparked a deeper interest in how languages function."

Over time, Bento began to notice limitations in traditional teaching methods. She found that many systems emphasized memorization without providing the structure needed to apply language effectively. This realization led her to develop her own framework, one that prioritizes understanding before repetition. "If you understand how the language is built and how people use it, you can start communicating much earlier, even with a limited vocabulary," she says.

Her approach centers on what she refers to as functional language, where learners focus on sentence construction, cultural nuance, and context rather than isolated words. She often uses a visual analogy to explain this process. "I see language as a tree where the trunk and branches are the structure, and the leaves are the vocabulary. Without the structure, the words do not connect into anything meaningful," she says. "Communication depends on how language is applied rather than how much of it is memorized."

This philosophy extends into how she designs her programs. Bento notes that her work is tailored to individuals who are often balancing demanding careers while preparing to relocate to Portugal or integrate into its culture. Rather than following a fixed curriculum, she adapts her teaching to align with each learner's interests and goals.

"If someone wants to talk about their work, their hobbies, or their daily life, that is exactly what we focus on, because language becomes meaningful when it reflects how people actually live and communicate," she says. "When learning is relevant to a person's reality, it becomes easier to retain, apply, and build confidence over time."

Her platform offers a range of resources, from structured online programs to immersive, in-person experiences. These immersion sessions are designed to take learners beyond conventional study environments and into real-life settings across Portugal. Bento frames these experiences as guided interactions where language is practiced through everyday activities alongside locals. According to her, this format allows learners to build confidence while also developing a deeper understanding of cultural context.

Alongside these experiences, Bento also produces a podcast that reflects her broader approach to language and culture. Through conversational episodes, she explores everyday life in Portugal, unpacking how language is used in real situations while offering listeners insight into cultural nuances that are often missed in traditional learning environments. She notes that this format allows learners to engage with Portuguese in a more natural way, reinforcing both listening skills and cultural awareness.

In addition to her teaching programs, Bento is expanding her work into creative formats. She is currently developing a book centered around a fictional Portuguese cat character, designed to explore language and cultural nuances through storytelling. While the format incorporates humor and satire, she explains that the goal is to provide an engaging way for adult learners to build vocabulary and comprehension. "It is not a children's book, it is a way to explore language and society through stories that reflect real situations, just told in a more creative way," she says.

Looking ahead, Bento envisions her work evolving into a broader ecosystem of learning and connection. She plans to build a community where learners can access resources, share experiences, and engage with both each other and local Portuguese culture. "I want to create a space where people do not just learn the language, but feel like they belong, because language is ultimately about connection," she says.

Through her work, Catarina Bento presents a perspective that reframes language learning as an adaptive, human-centered process. By focusing on structure, context, and interaction, her approach reflects an understanding that fluency is not defined by perfection, but by the ability to engage meaningfully with others.
