Burglar helped himself to asylum seeker's air pods at Nottingham hotel

A 24-year-old burglar let himself into two rooms where asylum seekers were being housed in a Nottingham hotel and stole items from them.

Nottingham Crown Court heard how Mohammed Al-Attar was himself living at the Britannia Hotel, in St James Street, when he took the headphones and perfume.

After it was discovered they were missing, CCTV was examined, his own room was searched and the goods recovered.

Also in his room was a small amount of cannabis which, in interview, the defendant said he thought was legal to possess.

Handing Al-Attar a 12-month community order, Judge Julie Warburton said: "You were a resident at the Britannia Hotel, in Nottingham, and between about 5.10pm and 6.40pm on January 2, you were seen entering two of the other rooms.

"They were rooms which were occupied by asylum seekers as were you at the time.

"You stole air pods from one room and perfume and a phone charger for the other.

"They were found in your room and were recovered along with an amount of cannabis and you were arrested.

"You admitted the offences in interview and admitted you were in drink.

"You are of previous good character and you have spent around a month in custody since your arrest."

Al-Attar, of St James Street, Nottingham, pleaded guilty to burglary.

Thomas Welshman, mitigating, said: "I ask you to deal with him by way of a community order which is the recommendation in the pre-sentence report.

"Upon release he hopes to go to a previous address in Coventry."

As part of the order, Judge Warburton ordered the defendant to attend 20 rehabilitation sessions with the probation service.
