British woman falls 100ft to her death while hiking on Italian mountain with husband

A woman from Britain has died after falling 100ft from a mountain in Italy. The 56-year-old had been hiking in the Dolomites in northern Italy with her husband when the tragedy happened.

Her body was recovered by an emergency helicopter and she has not been named in local reports. The Mirror reports the incident happened shortly before 2pm on the Santner via Ferrata, the iron path.

The via Ferrata is a mountainous path of fixed ropes, ladders and rungs that help hikers cross otherwise tricky and steep rocky terrain. The couple were around three-quarters of the way to the Santner refuge on the Catinaccio, in South Tyrol when the incident happened on Sunday, July 24.

The latest Dolomites death is the second confirmed tragedy involving Britons in Italy in the last week. It follows the death of businessman Aran Chada, a 51-year-old sales director from Leicestershire, who is thought to have had a seizure when he leapt from a boat into Lake Garda to save his young son from drowning.

Last week, a 55-year-old Italian tourist died when he lost his grip and plunged 40 metres to his death on the via Ferrata. While a week earlier, again on the Catinaccio, a young man lost his life falling from the aurenzi via Ferrata.

The Foreign Office has been approached for a statement. Updates as we get them.
