Brighton's main threat for Chelsea clash revealed and it may be Graham Potter transfer audition

It's almost two months since Chelsea confirmed Graham Potter would become Thomas Tuchel's successor at Stamford Bridge.

Not even two months. There's been so much that has happened in that time – it doesn't seem feasible that not even two months have passed yet.

In that time, Potter has seen his side draw three times and win the other six games. It's quite fitting that his 10th match in charge of the Blues will come at his old stomping ground: the Amex Stadium. The 47-year-old will face Brighton & Hove Albion for the first time since leaving the club to join Chelsea.

It remains to be seen what sort of reception Potter will get from the home supporters on Saturday afternoon, but regardless, he will look to continue his unbeaten start as Chelsea head coach. It will be difficult, though, with the Seagulls enjoying a strong start to the season.

Potter's successor, Roberto De Zerbi, has had a really difficult start to life as Brighton boss. De Zerbi has faced trips to Liverpool and Manchester City, as well as a home match against Tottenham, in his opening five games.

Only one player has scored for Brighton since De Zerbi was appointed: Leandro Trossard. The 27-year-old netted a stunning hat-trick to shock Anfield at the start of the month as Brighton drew 3-3 with Liverpool. He also scored a consolation goal in the Seagulls' 3-1 defeat to champions Manchester City last weekend.

Trossard has shown time and time again for Brighton that he can perform on the biggest stage against the so-called 'big six' (Chelsea included). The Belgium international was one of Potter's favourites during their time together at the Amex, with the head coach transitioning Trossard into a left wing-back.

Ever since Potter became Chelsea boss, the inevitable happened with Trossard. Reports have emerged that the Blues are interested in signing the Belgian as Potter looks for a possible reunion with his former player.

The Brighton star, when speaking to Het Nieuwsblad last month, said the speculation was nonsense but he did flirt with the idea of possibly teaming up with Potter again in the future.

He said: "Our coach did leave for Chelsea but speculation about me following him makes no sense. If the opportunity arises, I want to go. But I want to play and not sit on the bench."

This weekend's match will be a chance for Chelsea supporters to see what Trossard is all about. Although they will be hoping he isn't in the kind of form he has shown recently in front of goal.

As well as his talents offensively, Trossard has also shown perhaps a rather surprising ability to defend well at left wing-back. When Potter was Brighton head coach, he was asked about the Belgian and his defensive abilities and the now Chelsea boss was full of praise.

"Psychologically, if he is down there defending in a low-block, I'm not sure that's great for him," Potter said earlier this year. "But he is honest enough to match a full-back or match a wing-back. That is something he can do quite comfortably.

"He has played at wing-back for his country. Obviously, you want to try and have him further up the pitch than a defensive wing-back. It is up to the team to ensure that happens.

"There is probably a Plan B if he is not in the right position defensively because he is attacking. He cannot be in two places at the same time.

"I thought his all-round defensive attitude has been fantastic. He does his bit wherever he plays, in fairness to him. He doesn't look like the natural defender because of the type of player he is. But, in fairness, he does that bit."

It's similar treatment to what we have seen with Potter and Raheem Sterling so far at Chelsea. Sterling, when at Manchester City, was one of the Premier League's most prolific players in front of goal, but so far under Potter he has been used often as a wing-back, but one that isn't being asked to defend too much.
