The chaos is back—and it's louder, bolder, and pricier. After months of whispers, the next chapter in the Borderlands saga has officially been unveiled.
Borderlands 4 will be blasting its way into our lives on 12 September 2025, and for fans of the looter-shooter franchise, it's everything they've been hoping for—plus a few surprises.
The Price Point: A Matter of Value
Priced at $70 (£52.13), Borderlands 4 has joined the new wave of premium games commanding a higher price tag. But according to Take-Two Interactive's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, this isn't about cash grabs—it's about value.
In a recent earnings call, Zelnick was asked why Borderlands 4 isn't pushing for the £59.58 ($80) threshold that some titles have adopted.
'I think our approach may be a little bit different,' he said. 'We believe that any consumer experience is the intersection of the thing itself and what you paid for the thing. So our goal is to exceed expectations vastly.'
Zelnick elaborated that the aim is simple: 'We want to put out the best entertainment on Earth, and we want to deliver more value than what we charge for. And we think we've, generally speaking, gotten that right.'

In a related Variety interview, Strauss Zelnick sidestepped a query on whether GTA 6 would carry an $80 price. He answered with the statement, 'We've had variable pricing at the company forever.'
The Why Games Are Costing More- And Why That's Not Changing
Addressing the broader context of rising game prices, Zelnick reiterated that variable pricing has long been a standard practice within the industry. 'Fluctuating costs have always been the way of this business,' he explained.
He also pointed out the typical pricing trajectory: games often launch at a premium, sometimes with special editions, and are gradually reduced in price to capture a broader audience.
'I don't think that's going to change any time soon,' he added.
In addition to the price, further details have emerged regarding the game's release date and the platforms on which it will be available.
Borderlands 4 Launch Date and Supported Platforms
The game will launch globally on 12 September 2025, for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. The Nintendo Switch 2 version, however, will be available a few weeks later on 3 October 2025.
The initial launch had been scheduled for later in September, but its creators, Gearbox Software and 2K, advanced the date after receiving positive feedback from global media previews. This shift is viewed as a strong indication of confidence in the finished product.
Returning Characters and Vault Hunters
Some popular figures from the franchise are making a comeback in the new game, with some having a minor presence and others playing a key part in the storyline. According to the developers, the following characters are confirmed to appear:
- Claptrap
- Mad Moxxi
- Zane (from Borderlands 3)
- Amara (from Borderlands 3)

A report from ScreenHub also indicates that Lilith will make an appearance, possibly through archival footage, since she is instrumental in starting the new storyline. Furthermore, speculation is also widespread that Gaige and other former Vault Hunters may show up.
While these are the expected characters, there is always the hope that more surprise individuals will emerge throughout the adventure.
Final Thoughts
With a price that's stirred debate and a cast list that's guaranteed to please, Borderlands 4 looks set to make a thunderous impact when it arrives this September.
The developers' decision to bring the release forward suggests confidence in both the gameplay and the narrative.
For those itching to dive back into the bullet-riddled madness of Pandora, the countdown has officially begun.
