‘Bookings cancelled, no gas, stocks over’: Dharali villages struggle for food, fuel and survival

The disaster in Dharali has left the region cut off. With no road connectivity, the supply of essential goods has ground to a halt. Shopkeepers, hoteliers, dhaba owners, and transporters – whose livelihoods depend on the steady flow of visitors and supplies – now face crippling losses.

Neighbouring villages share the same fear: that ration stocks, from gas cylinders to rice and cooking oil, will soon run out. “There’s no gas cylinder, and the firewood is wet,” says one resident. “The stock of rations in the shop is running out, and customers are turning back,” says a shopkeeper.

The district headquarters remains out of reach, deepening the crisis for thousands. For many, this natural disaster also means the loss of their economic lifeline.

Watch this ground report to understand the challenges for the local economy as Uttarkashi struggles to reconnect.
