Best Halloween costumes for best friends: Matching, spooky and silly options for BFFs

The spookiest season of all is right around the corner, and while the ushering in of October means that we have to say goodbye to the last of those warm summer evenings – we’re here to get you into the Halloween spirit.

All Hallows’ Eve often arouses mixed feelings within individuals. Some resent the concept of dressing up in scary or silly costumes and dread the constant ringing of the doorbell, all while lamenting the fact that they had to buy a family pack of chocolate from Costco for anyone but themselves. The other, far more fun side of the Halloween camp celebrates the holiday just as hard as any other by going all-out with costumes, decorations, and pre-Halloween scary movie marathons.

These lovers of all things that go bump in the night are the type to have preferred watching Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and Laika’s Coraline over the December festive period, rather than cheesy classics such as Home Alone or The Snowman. They wear all-black ensembles even on the hottest of summer days and relate to Wednesday Addams more than any fictional character on the planet.

Nevertheless, whether you’re a Halloween hater or not, the ghostly holiday is infinitely better when enjoyed with friends. Specifically, your best friend. This is mainly because there aren’t any complicated group costume dynamics involving arguments over who gets to be which Spice Girl. Rather, you and your bestie can make the festival of Jack O’ Lanterns, fake blood and sweets all about curating the perfect costume to reflect your dynamic duo relationship.

We’ve rounded up a selection of the best costumes for gruesome twosomes this Halloween whether you’re opting for a spooky or silly costume.

The Princess Diaries – Mia Thermopolis and Lily Moscovitz

One of the most iconic films of the early 2000s, The Princess Diaries captured the hearts of the masses from the moment it hit cinemas. Relive the nostalgia by dressing up as the iconic Princess Mia Thermopolis and her best pal Lily Moscovitz with a blue plaid school skirt, pale blue Peter Pan-collared shirt and a retro navy chiffon neck scarf.

If you’re going as Mia, accessorise with some geeky specs and tease the heck out of your hair. For Lily, get some faux red streaks for your hair and some eccentric jewellery.

Ghosts from Taylor Swift’s Anti-Hero Music Video

One of our personal favourites on the list, spice up your classic not-so-spooky ghost costume by calling on inspiration from Taylor Swift’s iconic Anti-Hero music video. All you’ll need is a funky floral or checked flat sheet, some rhinestone cat ears or a fedora, and a pair of crazy sunglasses.

Euphoria – Maddy and Cassie

If you’re willing to spend an extra buck or two on a killer BFF costume, we recommend purchasing a pair of the Social Tourist V-Wait Flared Pants from Hollister in the two colours available – light blue and light pink. Pair with the coordinating scoop-neck tank top or go with your favourite club-ready piece. So long as you perfect the hair and glittery make-up, party-goers will recognise your costumes immediately.

Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie

Despite airing in early 2003, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie’s The Simple Life continues to make us cackle to this day. The constantly meme’d yet undeniably chic duo understood the assignment when they posed for the promotional cover for their fantastic reality show, recreating the historical American Gothic painting by Grant Wood with a 00s it-girl twist.

Embody Paris’ look with a denim corset top, matching micro mini skirt and plush toy chihuahua. If you’re going as Nicole, pair a classic pair of denim dungarees with a bedazzled bikini top. Go the extra mile with a (safe-for-partying) farmer’s pitchfork.

Statue of Liberty and NYC Tourist

The Statue of Liberty and a classic NYC tourist is a brilliant BFF costume idea for this Halloween. Simply purchase a Lady Liberty costume and a classic I Love New York tee, and accessorise with a pair of ridiculous cargo shorts and disposable camera which you can then use to document your wild night.

The Shining’s Grady Sisters

Send freezing cold chills down the spine of whomever crosses your paths with a couple’s outfit inspired by the 80s classic horror, The Shining. Great for girls, even more wonderfully peculiar on grown men, this set of vintage-looking dresses feature Peter Pan collars, puffed sleeves and a waist bow. A scarily easy look for guaranteed frights.

Fighting fire

For a certified fire costume, one half of the BFF duo should dress up as a fireman, while the other dons a flaming (yet hopefully flame retardant) ensemble. This Halloween-ready tutu from Etsy paired with a firey headband or bucket hat should do the trick. Add a water pistol to the costume and attempt to put your pal’s flames out throughout the night for a silly twist.

Steve Irwin and a Crocodile

The late, great Steve Irwin was an incredibly popular man, known for striking up friendships with frightening crocodiles. Honour the Crocodile Dundee’s lifelong relationship with the ferocious reptiles this Halloween – simply scoop up a classic safari explorer costume, and a crocodile onesie.

Angel and Spike from Buffy The Vampire Slayer

The OG warring vampire boyfriends (that’s right, before Stefan and Damon Salvatore came along), Angel and Spike costumes make for a brilliant duo Halloween costume. So long as you’ve got a long black leather jacket for Spike, as well as some platinum blonde temporary hair make-up, all you’ll need for both vamps is some black clothes and a moody, pouty look on your face.

If you’re feeling extra scary and have some experience with SFX, go full vampire with the help of Halloween prosthetics kit and a characteristic ‘vampire brow’. After all, the Buffy’s early seasons featured some hilariously awful vamps, so the final look certainly doesn’t have to be perfect.

Two lobsters

Whether worn as an ode to the concept of finding one’s lobster as popularised by hit sitcom Friends, or – if your memory can stretch back far enough – the ‘bring in the dancing lobsters’ bit from Judge Judy sketch on The Amanda Show, a pair of lobsters is a winner Halloween costume in our eyes.

Peter Pan and his Shadow

Napoleon Dynamite – Napoleon and Pedro

This geeky duo is the perfect BFF costume for indie film lovers. All you’ll need for Napoleon is the iconic ‘Vote for Pedro’ tee, an Annie-style curly hair wig and some nerdy aviator spectacles. For Pedro, a pale blue western-style shirt, bolo tie and drawn-on moustache should do the trick.
