Beamish Museum jobs up for grabs which allow you to step back in time and bring history to life


There are currently a number of exciting opportunities to work at Beamish living museum - including a chance to manage the day-to-day running of its latest addition.

The County Durham site is looking to fill four vacancies at the museum to ensure it continues to deliver an enjoyable and memorable family day out. The new recruits will join a huge team of 350 staff and 400 volunteers who continue to help draw in visitors to the 350 acre site that represents the diverse histories and heritage of the North from the 1820s, 1900s, 1940s and 1950s.

Among the vacancies is an opportunity to become a team leader for Beamish's recently opened 1950s town. The town, which first opened in March 2022, features a hairdressers, fish and chip shop and a recreation of the former home of North East artist Norman Cornish.

The 1950s Town, as well as a 1950s farm, have been created thanks to the museum's biggest development project in it's history, Remaking Beamish. The museum received a Capital Kickstart Fund award of £975,500 from the government's £1.57billion Culture Recovery Fund for the Remaking Beamish project.

It is one of the latest grants awarded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund on behalf of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. It's specifically aimed at live projects that the coronavirus pandemic has had a negative impact on.

1950s Town Team Leader

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 1950s Town Team Leader within the museum's Engagement Team. Successful applicants will have excellent communication, organisation and people management skills as well as knowledge of the history of the North in East to lead the day-to-day running of the 1950s Town and the people who work and volunteer within it.

The 1950s Town Team Leader will lead and manage the 1950s Town Team in the care, good management, interpretation and engagement for the benefit of museum visitors and work with the Keeper of Social History & Remaking Beamish Engagement Development Officer as the area develops, telling key North East stories and continuing to put the visitor first.

The Collections Assistant is a full-time role (£20,910 per annum).

Community Participation Officer (x2)

Beamish is currently recruiting for two Community Participation Officers to develop and deliver creative and dynamic community participation activities that engage community members and enable local people to participate meaningfully in decision making within the project.

Within the role, Community Participation Officers will collect oral histories and stories from groups and individuals and ensure the summarising and storage process is carried out effectively. They will also use social media to develop, maintain and foster new links with diverse audiences and communities, promoting the Remaking Beamish project activities.

Both Community Participation Officer vacancies are maternity cover roles, with one part-time role and the other full-time. (£20,910 per annum, pro-rata for part time)

Collections Assistant

Beamish is currently looking to recruit a Collections Assistant to assist the Head of Collections with looking after the museum's collections, including cataloguing and documentation, conservation, object movement, and collections access, with a specific focus on facilitating the use of collections items in the Remaking Beamish project.

Successful applicants will have a Museum Studies, Conservation, History, or related qualification, or relevant experience of working with museum collections. The will also hold a valid UK driving license, ideally with capability and confidence to drive a wide range of vehicles, including large vans

The Collections Assistant is a fixed term 12 month full-time role (£19,839 per annum).
