BBC Eat Well For Less? features breakfast calorie swap that could save 200 calories

BBC One’s Eat Well For Less? showed an easy way to drop 200 calories from an average breakfast. Just changing how you take your morning coffee could make a huge difference to the number of calories being consumed first thing in the morning.

During the programme, presenters Jordan Banjo and Chris Bavin undertook a fascinating challenge to see how two identical meals at opposite ends of the calorie spectrum compared. Jordan began by testing his hosting partner, presenting him with two identical-looking breakfasts.

However, one of these was a high-calorie option and the other was much lower in calories. Viewers didn't have to look much further than the coffees for a gem of a calorie swap.

It was revealed that the higher calorie coffee was in fact a whole milk latte, which is standard in most UK coffee shops, while the alternative was an americano with a splash of semi-skimmed milk. Just by drinking the americano instead of the latte you could save a whopping 200 calories on your daily total.

The meal was complete with a plate of avocado and scrambled eggs on toast. Chris said: “The one on my right I don’t think the scrambled eggs have been scrambled in any butter.

“The one on my left has obviously got more avocado, the egg to my taste has either been cooked in butter or cream or possibly even both.” The 42-year-old correctly identified that the one on his left was the higher calorie option.

Additionally, on the lower-calorie option, the bread was revealed as being medium sliced as opposed to thick and a low-fat spread was used rather than butter. In total, 1,053 calories were within the higher calorie breakfast, compared to just 377 on the other side.

This totalled at a remarkable difference of around 700 calories between the two indistinguishable meals.
