AstraZeneca daily pill shows promising weight loss results in trial

  • AstraZeneca 's experimental daily weight loss pill, elecoglipron, has shown promising results in phase II trials, leading to significant body weight reduction and improved blood sugar levels for those with type 2 diabetes.
  • In the Vista trial , overweight or obese participants without type 2 diabetes lost 10.5 per cent of their body weight at 26 weeks with the highest dose, also experiencing lower blood pressure and inflammation.
  • The Solstice trial found that, compared to a placebo, elecoglipron was more effective in lowering blood sugar and promoting weight loss in individuals with type 2 diabetes and a body mass index higher than 23.
  • A key distinction of elecoglipron is its administration as a daily tablet, and it does not require fasting as associated with other weight loss pills.
  • Common side effects reported across both trials – published in the Lancet – included nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting.
