A third animated Moana movie is in the works, according to Maui star Dwayne Johnson.
Johnson voices Maui in Moana and Moana 2, and he's about to play the demi god in live-action when the remake arrives very soon.
"Yes, we have talked about Moana 3, yes," Johnson revealed at a press conference in Brazil (via Variety). "But first, live-action Moana, we'll let that come out first. We have [the] amazing Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, who have been our writers… they will pen Moana 3."
While Moana 2 made a billion at the box office, it looks like the live-action remake might not fare as well. In June, Deadline predicted the movie would debut to an $85 million domestic total – in comparison, Toy Story 5's domestic total on opening weekend was $159.7 million.
Still, that's better than Supergirl, which debuted to $37 million domestically, and in line with The Mandalorian and Grogu, which took $98 million across the four day Memorial Day weekend and $82 million across the traditional three day period. But, with Moana 2's massive gross, it's undoubtedly a disappointing prediction for the remake. Disney's last live-action remake, Lilo and Stitch, also grossed over a billion in 2025.
Along with Johnson, the live-action Moana stars Catherine Laga'aia as Moana, Rena Owen as Gramma Tala, and Jemaine Clement as the voice of Tamatoa.
The live-action Moana arrives this July 10. In the meantime, check out our guide to all the upcoming movies or new Disney movies to fill out your watchlist.
