Dementia deaths more than doubled in Australia in the 15 years between 2009 and 2024, the latest available data shows, making it one of the most urgent public health issues.

According to the peak body Dementia Australia, without significant intervention more than 1 million Australians will be living with dementia by 2065.

The statistics are in part a reflection of a population living longer. But age is not a cause of dementia, nor does it or improved screening fully explain the rise of a condition that is complicated and difficult to treat.

This is in part because dementia is not one illness. Rather, it can affect anybody including children (though it is more common in those over 65), and is caused by more than 100 illnesses and conditions, making research into treatments difficult. Alzheimer’s disease (which also has many types) is just one cause of dementia.

Dementia might also present with very different symptoms, with some forms affecting speech and other types more impacting memory, coordination or the senses. Dementia is a major cause of disability and dependence.

In 2026, there are an estimated 446,500 Australians living with dementia. If you are among them, we would like to hear from you to guide our series on living with dementia and what supports and awareness are needed.
