Anti-Israel protesters clashed with police in New York City on Friday as they aimed to disrupt a big-money fundraiser for President Biden, held 24 hours after his debate with former President Trump.
Demonstrators chanted, 'There is only one solution — Intifada revolution!' as they marched from Madison Square Garden toward the Hammerstein Ballroom in Midtown Manhattan where the political gathering was taking place.
Police reported that at least 38 people were taken into custody in relation to the protest. Video footage showed protesters shouting expletives at police and raising their middle fingers, while officers in riot gear arrested some of the unruly demonstrators who refused orders to move onto the sidewalk.
The protesters set off green and red smoke bombs, creating chaotic scenes. One protester in a wheelchair was seen on the ground as smoke filled the air.
Many of the masked or keffiyeh-wearing protesters carried Palestinian flags, along with flags of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and the trans flag. The rally was organized by Within Our Lifetime, an anti-Israel activist group that called on their followers to 'confront genocide Joe.'
Protesters then moved to Madison Square Park, where clashes with a pro-Israel supporter occurred. Inside the Hammerstein Ballroom, more than 640 donors gathered to hear Biden speak after his debate with Trump. Tickets for the fundraiser ranged from $250 to $500,000, with actors Billy Porter and Alan Cumming in attendance.
New York City has seen a rise in anti-Israel protests, with recent incidents at Columbia University and clashes outside an exhibit memorializing victims of an attack. Biden, addressing supporters in North Carolina, acknowledged his age but emphasized his ability to lead and get things done.
