Algeria take on DR Congo in the penultimate Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 showdown this afternoon.

Vladimir Petkovic’s side have won all three of their games at AFCON so far, conceding just once in the process.

They topped Group E, above Burkina Faso and Sudan, and were just one of two teams to come out perfect in the group stage.

Now, the Desert Warriors are pitted against a tricky opponent.

The DR Congo finished second behind Senegal in Group D, and missed out on topping the table on goal difference.

Sebastien Desabre’s side drew with the group winners on matchday two, with that result sandwiched by wins over Benin and Botswana.

Nigeria await the winners in the quarter-final after cruising to a 4-0 win over Mozambique on Monday evening.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Algeria vs DR Congo is scheduled for a 4pm GMT kick-off today, Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

The match will take place at the Stade Prince Moulay Al Hassan in Rabat, Morocco.

Algeria vs DR Congo team news

Algeria have an injury concern over left-back Jaouen Hadjam, while Manchester City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri is a doubt after being struck down by the flu.

Otherwise, the Desert Warriors have a star-studded squad for Petkovic to pick from.

Riyad Mahrez remains their star man off the right flank, and the former Manchester City winger was the difference in the narrow 1-0 win over Burkina Faso on matchday two.

Zinedine Zidane’s son Luca keeps goal for the Desert Warriors, who also boast the likes of Borussia Dortmund’s Ramy Bensebaini, Dinamo Zagreb’s Ismael Bennacer, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Fares Chaibi.

As for the DR Congo, Desabre has a full complement to choose from.

They have Premier League full-backs - West Ham past and present - Arthur Masuaku and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, as well as former Newcastle defender Chancel Mbemba at centre-back. Axel Tuanzebe completes the back four in front of Lionel Mpasi.

Sunderland’s Noah Sadiki is in the heart of the midfield, while former Chelsea attacking midfielder Gael Kakuta was on target with a brace against Botswana after some heavy squad rotation.

Algeria vs DR Congo prediction

This should be an evenly-matched affair.

Both sides could represent Africa in the World Cup this summer, although the DR Congo will have to do it the hard way through the confederation play-offs.

Algeria have more firepower and quality in the final third, and their defence has been near impenetrable at this tournament so far.

Cedric Bakambu is an experienced head up top for the DR Congo, but can he - along with the tricky Theo Bongonda - unlock the Algerian backline?

Algeria to win, 2-1.
