AJ Odudu think it’s all about balance when it comes to the ultimate trip with friends. She loves Los Angeles for its mix of beach and city life — and restaurant Laurel Hardware. Here’s her guide to the city.
Where is your favourite destination and why?
Los Angeles, because it’s got a gorgeous balance of city life and the beach. Plus, you can have fun partying or lean into the wellness scene. And boy do they do wellness well — LA is huge on Pilates classes, green juices and hikes, but you can balance it with amazing restaurants and good nightlife.
The first time I went I didn’t really see LA, because I went on a road trip and we started off there, but then drove to South by Southwest Festival in Texas. I’d just touched down — and then I was off! I only saw the Hollywood Hills. Then a few years ago I went with my friend Adrienne, and we had a really good wellness trip with some poolside fun — that’s when I fell in love.
When was the last time you were there and who were you with?
I was there in May with my friend and agent, and then I caught up with loads of other mates who live in LA. It was a combination of business and pleasure. It was the first time I’ve been in a very long time, so it was good to be reunited with the city.

Where do you like to stay there?
Sunset Tower, in West Hollywood, is brilliant. It’s very old-school and quaint, but cool. I love the interior design and they have an amazing bar with a speakeasy vibe. Plus the breakfast is amazing. There’s a huge all-you-can-eat spread. Make sure you try the omelettes, or order a stack of pancakes and maple syrup.
What has been your favourite meal there?
Laurel Hardware in West Hollywood serves life-changing pasta bolognese. It’s so saucy and delicious.
What are your top three restaurants?

At Laurel Hardware I love the funky seating and gorgeous roof terrace. There’s a pink marble bar upstairs. Try the fish starters. Then there’s seafood restaurant Loreto and Saffy’s, which serves Middle Eastern. They all have really good drinks and that’s what you want after a meal. They know how to do a great dirty martini or margarita.
What’s a hidden gem you’re willing to share?
Chifa restaurant is gorgeous and great for celeb spotting. Everyone there is very chic, and they dress in a fabulous way.
What is the one unmissable thing you recommend doing?
You’ve got to go to a gig. The SoFi stadium is incredible. It’s a bit of a nightmare to get to because LA traffic is wild, but you can get scooters — they’re the equivalent of our Lime bikes. Last time I was there I was lucky enough to watch Kendrick Lamar and SZA.
Where do you like to let your hair down?
Around the corner from Laurel Hardware is a club called Delilah. Drake loves going there. The music’s always amazing. They have live music nights, and every time I’ve been it’s been a completely different vibe. Sometimes they have a jazz band playing, but then other times there’s been soul, funk and R&B or sometimes DJ nights. After dinner they clear the tables and then you can have a bit of a dance.
What would you do if you only had 24 hours there?

After landing, check into Sunset Tower and go straight to the pool, have a sunbathe and rejuvenate after that long flight. Then go for a hike — do the cliché thing and get a picture with the Hollywood sign. Do the Walk of Fame. Chill in your room with an under-eye mask on. Then prep for the night ahead and go out for a gorgeous dinner at Laurel Hardware, soaking in the lively atmosphere. And, of course, dance the night away at Delilah. In the morning you have to do a fitness class — maybe some Pilates. It’s all about balance.
Favourite shops?
I always go vintage shopping in LA. Go to the flea markets at Rose Bowl and Long Beach, and you’ll find some cool clothes.
I’d love to live in Chateau Marmont. For the history, the vibes, the greed of it all. Imagine if the walls could talk to me
Your packing essentials?
A massive bag to carry your water or juices in, as well as the clothes that will take you from day to night. You need trainers and fitness kit, too. It’s such a cool city, but it’s quite spread out, so you’re always walking or catching a car. Plus, hydration sachets and under-eye masks to keep you feeling fresh if you’re fried from the night before.
What’s your favourite beauty spot?
It’s hard to choose as there’s so many beautiful hikes, from the Griffith Observatory to the Runyon Canyon.

What’s the dress code for LA?
I’d define it as casual swag. On a night out I’d wear a maxi skirt with a matching bralette and bring a jacket to put on when it gets cooler.
I’d wear that with a little kitten heel or some neutral trainers.
Do you exercise when travelling?
Yes, I’m a Reformer girl — there’s something about the big apparatus. It feels like you’re getting onto a big climbing frame, and that helps distract me from all the pain that’s happening.
Do you have a top wellness tip for the area?
Alo has an amazing studio there for some Pilates practice. It’s an iconic place.
A building you’d like to live in?
Chateau Marmont! For the history, the vibes, the greed of it all. Imagine if the walls could talk to me in my sleep — that’d be great. I’d have a suite there on standby for me.
