AFL star Martin out of Tigers-Giants clash

Richmond's Dustin Martin will miss the round-two clash against GWS at the MCG for personal reasons. (AAP)

Richmond superstar Dustin Martin has been ruled out of the AFL club's round-two clash with GWS because of personal reasons.

Martin was named in the Tigers' initial squad on Thursday despite being granted time away from the club earlier in the week.

He was officially withdrawn from the 23-man team on Friday, replaced by inexperienced midfielder Will Martyn.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick did not go into any details of Martin's situation at his mid-week press conference, but the 30-year-old's father Shane died last December in New Zealand.

"He's dealing with a couple of personal issues and whether he's available to play this week, we're unsure at this stage," Hardwick said before training on Thursday.

"So we won't close the door, but we just want to make sure that Dustin's OK.

"We'll give him his time.

"He's so important to the fabric of our footy club, we just want to make sure he's OK and he's getting what he needs."

The 2017 Brownlow Medallist and three-time Norm Smith Medallist's absence adds to Richmond's growing number of headaches after their round-one defeat to Carlton.

Premiership stars Dion Prestia (hamstring) and Jack Riewoldt (fractured thumb) were injured against the Blues and ruled out this week.
