Admn allows civic body to collect property tax from 13 villages

CHANDIGARH: The commercial properties of all the 13 villages transferred to the municipal corporation (MC) in 2018 have to pay property tax from the current financial year as the UT administration has finally withdrawn its decision to exempt them.

The civic body is all set to earn additional Rs 76.11 lakh from the 3,081 commercial properties falling in the villages.

Although the property tax was imposed in 2020, the owners were exempted from paying tax owing to Covid-19 outbreak. The benefit was extended in 2021. A few days back, the MC had written to the UT to allow it to collect the tax.

Following the order, the MC has started sending bills to the property owners. “We have published bills for these new properties, added them to our record and started sending the bills to people. With this decision, the MC will get a significant boost in its revenue collection”, sources said.
