Adam Schiff Hits Sable Offshore Over Oil Spill Risk, Then Blasts Trump's Washington Airport Makeover as Gas Prices Climb: 'Cost Is No Object...'

Long,Beach,,Ca,-,Nov,16,,2019:,Senator,Adam,Schiff

Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) accused Sable Offshore Corp. (NYSE:SOC) of risking causing another oil spill following the 2015 oil spill that led to the California pipeline’s shutdown and caused significant damage to the ecosystem.

Sable Killing Environmental Laws

In a post on X on Wednesday, Schiff shared a letter he wrote, addressed to Sable CEO James C. Flores, questioning him about the company’s ties to President Donald Trump and his associates. “Californians deserve transparency from Sable about its efforts to kill environmental protections and risk another big oil spill,” Schiff said.

He then accused the company of “putting profit over people” and collaborating with the Trump administration to “dodge accountability from Congress.” The letter listed several questions to the CEO, including talks of donations to the Trump campaign, among others.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) had earlier said that the Trump administration illegally invoked the Defense Production Act and revived the pipeline off the coast of Santa Barbara, despite which, gas prices remained elevated. Newsom had also said that the pipeline could risk causing damage to the state’s coastal economy.

Schiff Slams Trump’s Washington Airport Makeover

In a separate post on X, Schiff decried elevated gas prices in the U.S. following escalating tensions with Iran. He quoted a video by journalist Aaron Rupar, which showed Trump outlining his plans for the over $22 billion Washington Dulles International Airport redesign. “Cost was no object, unfortunately or fortunately,” Trump said in the video.

“Cost is no object for Trump’s vanity projects using your tax dollars,” he said, adding that it was “certainly” an object for Americans at “the grocery store and the gas station” across the country. “Imagine if he cared half as much about lowering your costs as he does about his gold-plated makeovers,” Schiff said.

Gas prices recorded a marginal uptick on Thursday, with the data from the American Automobile Association (AAA) showing the national average still hovered above $4 at $4.0980/gallon at the pump. California had the highest average price at $5.6480/gallon, with Mono County residents paying the highest average price of $6.8500/gallon.
