A New Dodge Durango Is Coming in 2029. Here's Everything We Know

Nearly two decades will separate the launch of the third-generation Dodge Durango from the upcoming fourth-generation model. Dodge will replace the current Durango by the end of the decade with one that will ride on a Stellantis platform, which likely means we’ll see a series of new powertrain options, too.

The current-generation Durango launched for 2011, and Dodge has updated and refreshed the model several times since. The SUV eventually received the same high-powered SRT Hellcat treatment as the last-generation Charger and Challenger, and it remains in production today with 710 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque.

It’s unclear what the next-generation Durango will offer under the hood. Stellantis has recently introduced new inline-four and inline-six powertrains, but Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Chrysler are still working hard to keep the V-8 alive with the new architecture. So anything’s possible.

What we do know is that Stellantis has confirmed a next-generation Dodge Durango in about four years from now. While we don’t know much for certain, we can look at other Stellantis models to get an idea of what to expect. This is everything we know about the next-generation Dodge Durango.

What Will Dodge Call It?

The first Dodge Durango launched for the 1998 model year, the same year Chrysler and Daimler merged. Since then, Dodge has launched two more generations of the SUV, which shares its name with a town in Colorado.

We don’t expect that name to change with the launch of the 2029 model—but maybe a few new trim options will join the mix.

What Platform Will It Ride On?

We expect the fourth-generation Dodge Durango to ride on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform. It underpins several models, including the Charger, Jeep Cherokee, and Jeep Wagoneer S. The automaker designed the architecture for a range of powertrain types, including combustion, hybrid, and electric.

What Engine Will the New Durango Have?

Stellantis’ American brands have been touting the flexibility of the STLA Large architecture. It’s capable of accommodating a range of powertrain types, but we expect the Durango to launch with combustion engines, likely borrowing the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter Hurricane straight-sixes from the Charger.

The engine produces 550 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque in its High-Output tune, paired with an updated version of the eight-speed TorqueFlight automatic transmission. The Standard Output engine makes 420 hp and 468 lb-ft of torque.

The Durango could also borrow the electric powertrain from the Charger Daytona. It features two electric motors, producing 670 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, along with a 100.5-kilowatt-hour battery.

We also wouldn’t be surprised if Stellantis’ newly introduced Hurricane 4 Turbo engine also makes an appearance under the Durango’s hood. The automaker introduced the engine in the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 324 hp and 332 lb-ft, which is more than the current V-6.

What Will the New Durango Look Like?

The new Charger was the first Dodge to use the SLTA Large architecture. Its design diverged from the retro cues of the previous generation, featuring a sharper, more modern aesthetic, which our Durango rendering adopts.

The rendering has slim headlights connected by a full-width light bar across the front, which defines the grille. Sharp creases define the wheel arches and extend onto the doors. At the rear, the Durango features the same "ring of fire" LED taillights as the Charger, which has front and rear illuminated Fratzog logos.

When Does the 2029 Durango Debut?

The next-generation Durango will arrive in 2029, so it’ll likely be several more years before it actually debuts. We don’t expect Dodge to officially introduce the new SUV until 2028, although we expect the brand to tease its launch ahead of the debut.

How Much Will the Durango Cost?

The entry-level 2026 Dodge Durango costs $40,990, which comes with the 3.6-liter V-6 engine. In 2021, the Durango started at $33,260 for the SXT trim, which is no longer available. However, a new Durango at that price seems unlikely, considering the Hornet costs $31,990.

It’s impossible to predict four years from now what a new model will cost, but $40,000 seems like the model’s new pricing floor, and it’ll likely only increase in the coming years. We wouldn’t be shocked if the 2029 Durango starts around the $45,000 mark.
