A man has been charged after an A&E doctor was stabbed while on duty at a West London hospital.
Officers were called to Hillingdon Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday over a separate matter, when they were alerted to the incident.
The doctor, aged in his 50s, was treated at the hospital for stab wounds. His injuries are believed to be non life-threatening or life-changing.
Mahdi Abdullahi, 27, of Uxbridge, was arrested and has subsequently been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon, and theft of knives.
He was remanded to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court later today.
Enquiries into the circumstances that led to the stabbing continue.
There has been a stark rise in the levels of abuse experienced by medical staff in recent years.
One in 10 UK doctors have reported being attacked by patients or members of the public while on duty.
A Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust spokesperson said: “We continue to support and reassure our staff following this incident.
“The safety and well-being of our staff is our highest priority and any form of violence or aggression towards our teams is unacceptable.”
Part of Hillingdon Hospital was closed while officers dealt with the incident, according to reports. It has now fully reopened.
A spokesperson for the Met Police said: "Police officers, who were at the hospital following a separate report, responded at around 02:40hrs on Tuesday, 26 May.
"A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm.
"A man in his 50s was treated for his wounds at hospital.
"Mahdi Abdullahi, 27 (07.10.98) of Pield Heath Road, Uxbridge, was charged earlier this morning, Wednesday, 27 May with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon and theft of knives.
"He was remanded to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court later this morning, Wednesday, 27 May."
