For some, however, starting the tax filing process can be daunting. For those who are struggling with where to start, here’s how ChatGPT can help with filing taxes.

Also see four smart moves to make before you submit your taxes.

1. Understanding the Basics

While nothing can substitute the expertise of a tax professional, an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant can help taxpayers understand basic information. According to ChatGPT, it can help individuals understand key concepts, including what income is taxable, standard vs. itemized deductions and how tax brackets work.

As reported by the IRS, most tax mistakes are avoidable. Understanding basic tax information can help people avoid common errors, like missing a deduction or using the wrong filing status.

2. Organizing Information

Another way ChatGPT may prove useful for tax filers is in getting more organized. The chatbot said it can aid people by creating a tax preparation checklist, list common documents that may be needed or help categorize expenses for deductions.

For many people, just knowing what they need to gather is half the battle.

3. Estimating Tax Liability

While ChatGPT explicitly noted that it cannot access a person’s financial accounts, it can help to roughly calculate taxable income when figures are provided. The AI assistant can also show how adjustments may affect a refund or the amount that is owed.

Most mistakes on tax returns are avoidable, so using a system to double-check figures is never a bad idea. According to TurboTax, the IRS found nearly 2.5 million math errors on tax returns in a single year. If numbers vary significantly from what is expected, it may be a red flag and worth another look to ensure accuracy prior to filing.

4. Explaining IRS Changes

Depending on the year, there may be a plethora of changes to the tax law. ChatGPT can help taxpayers by providing information on these changes and how they may affect filings.

While AI assistants have come a far way, working with a tax professional or verifying information is always strongly recommended.

5. Helping With Forms

While ChatGPT cannot physically fill out tax forms on a payer’s behalf, it can explain the most commonly used forms for each situation and provide step-by-step guidance on how to fill out each section.

It is important to note that the chatbot also cannot submit or file taxes. It also will not provide personalized legal or tax advice. Those are best left to licensed professionals.
