Michelle Bachelet , the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, is discussing with China a potential visit to the Xinjiang region, in what could provide rare, close-up foreign scrutiny of accusations of abuses against ethnic Uyghurs.

China's foreign ministry said the United Nations human rights chief is welcome to visit Xinjiang but not for the purpose of an investigation, when asked about a report the commissioner was invited to come in the first half of 2022.

South China Morning Post reported that Beijing approved Bachelet’s trip on the condition that it should be ‘friendly’.
