Volunteers with My Block, My Hood, My City decorated South Side homes for Christmas, a man was killed and a woman was critically injured in a house fire in Lawndale, and theater-goers enjoyed the opening night of “Boop! The Betty Boop Musical.”

A fire occurred about 5 a.m. Sunday on the first floor of a two-story building at 1521 S. Linn White Drive, the Chicago Fire Department said. No one was reported hurt.

Firefighters like Andrew Price, and three others who died this year, chose to enter a career that they knew might involve risking their lives for others. How many of the rest of us would do the same?

Price, 39, was taken Monday morning to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he died. ‘Loved by so many, he will be missed by all,’ said Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt.

The officer’s injuries Monday were apparently not life-threatening, according to the Chicago Fire Department, which said another officer was treated for injuries at the scene in the 7300 block of South Dante Avenue.

The fire was mainly contained to the roof, and the steeple of the church collapsed from the flames, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Police, fire and Coast Guard crews conducted a search for a man who jumped off a boat Tuesday. The man was identified by a family member as Bryan Jackson, 38.

Lt. Kevin Ward is the third Chicago Fire Department member to die in the line of duty this year. “We haven’t healed from the last few deaths we’ve had,” Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt said. “We continue to try to lift each other up, but it’s hard when it keeps happening.”

The organization hopes to expose girls to nontraditional careers and show them that they can succeed in male-dominated fields.
