Finland has announced it is in favour of joining NATO, a major policy shift sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Its neighbour, Sweden, is expected to decide on joining the military alliance in the coming days.

Sweden will take into account Finland's NATO assessments when deciding on whether it will send an application, the Swedish foreign minister said on Thursday.

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Finland and Sweden have been considering applying for membership of the NATO military alliance, which would mark a major policy shift for the Nordic region.

On Thursday night, 18 countries will take part in the second semi final of Eurovision 2022 including well fancied Sweden

The statement by the president and prime minister comes a day after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited both Finland and Sweden to sign a military cooperation agreement.
