Makino was airlifted to hospital after being caught up in the multi-car incident that caused last Sunday's Motegi Super Formula round to be red-flagged on the opening lap.

The #24 Kondo Nissan Z of Sasaki and Kohei Hirate entered qualifying firmly among the favourites for pole, carrying only 6kg of success ballast and having taken the top spot last time out at Suzuka, only to be stripped of pole due to a fuel tank infraction.

Tetsuta Nagashima set a blistering time of 2m05.722s aboard the #33 factory HRC Fireblade, becoming the only rider to break the 2m06s barrier as he boosted Honda’s hopes of repeating its pole position from last year.
