WILMINGTON, Del. — Fox News avoided one of the highest-profile defamation trials in history Tuesday by reaching a $787.5 million settlement with Dominion Voting Systems, the company that accused the conservative channel of smearing its reputation in the weeks after the 2020 election.

The Dominion Voting Systems defamation suit against Fox News was one of the most hotly anticipated cases in America. In the end, most of the action happened outside the courtroom.

Fox News has struck a deal averting a trial in the blockbuster defamation suit filed by the election-tech company Dominion Voting Systems over spurious claims of fraud in the 2020 presidential race.
