The United States will not recognize the results of any effort by Russia or its proxies to divide sovereign Georgian territory, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said on Thursday, after Georgia rejected plans by the Russian-backed breakaway region of South Ossetia to hold a referendum on joining Russia.

There has been "limited additional progress" on Washington's demand for consular access to U.S. citizens detained in Russia, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said on Thursday, adding that the United States continued to ask for regular and consistent access to detainees.

A U.S. official granted access to detained WNBA's Brittney Griner found her to be in "good condition," the State Department said Wednesday.

The U.S. State Department says a U.S. Embassy official has visited with WNBA star Brittney Griner, who remains detained near Moscow, to check on her condition

Spokesperson Ned Price says U.S. officials were able to meet with the WNBA star in Russia.

"We will continue to work very closely with her legal team ... to see to it that she is treated fairly."

The U.S. Embassy in Russia was finally granted consular access to the detained WNBA star.
