Two community organizers see their wins as a progressive blueprint for taking on the establishment and mobilizing the Democratic base.

Texans are heading to the polls Tuesday to make their final selections for which Democrats and Republicans will run for various seats in the November election.

Both of the candidates running in the May 28, 2024, Democratic primary runoff election for Texas State Senate District 15 — Molly Cook (D) and Jarvis Johnson (D) — completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. These survey responses allow voters to hear directly from candidates about what motivates them to run for office.

Ballotpedia tracked five new state-level candidates in Texas between Nov. 20-26. This was equal to the number of candidates tracked last week. 

State Sen. John Whitmire, first elected in 1982, and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, in office since 1995, could be vacating seats that haven’t been open for decades. The election calendar, however, may bring a tough decision for one or both.

Critics call for removal of state agency’s economic mandate.

Democratic primary elections for 24 of 31 seats in the Texas State Senate took place on March 1, 2022. Of the 24 seats up for election in 2022, six had a primary election with more than one candidates.
