Move by president signals start of White House fightback after supreme court struck down Roe v Wade

When United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died with 10 months left in President Barack Obama’s second term, Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader at the time, took the extreme step of refusing to hold hearings for his nominated replacement, Merrick Garland.

The protests have carried on for weeks since the leak of a draft of the court's eventual decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. State officials had previously called on federal law enforcement for help.
