The 26-year-old Florida-born American Swede hasn’t competed in North America’s premier open wheel championship since 2021 but could be poised for a return to the grid in 2024. 

A development driver for CGR since May 2022, Simpson spent the past two years competing in Indy NXT. This year, he earned two podiums - including a career-best runner-up result at Mid-Ohio and one pole en route to 10th in the championship standings.

After a season-best performance stateside, the 25-year-old continues to strive for an opportunity to drive a Formula One car.

And he then proved untouchable, leading all 35 laps en route to winning by a staggering 17.8813s.

This weekend’s event on 11-turn, 2.238-mile permanent road course in Monterey will comprise 95 laps (212 miles). This will be the 26th IndyCar race at the track.

Rowe made history as the first African American to win a race in USF Pro 2000 and also the first to win an open-wheel championship in North America.

The two organizations came together in 2021 with David Malukas rising from Indy NXT into North America’s premier open-wheel championship in Coyne’s No. 18 Honda-powered entry.

Despite only having three IndyCar Series starts under his belt, with a best finish of 12th, the 24-year-old Swede will effectively replace fellow countryman Marcus Ericsson in Ganassi’s elite driver line-up, who signed for Andretti Autosport last week.
