AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Senate on Tuesday gave preliminary approval to two bills that would restrict, and at times criminalize, drag shows and anything else deemed a “sexually oriented performance.”

The Senate expanded the bill targeting drag queen story hours to target all public funding for libraries. The upper chamber also approved a bill limiting other drag performances kids can see.

The proposal would remove sales tax on diapers, baby wipes and bottles; feminine hygiene products including tampons, sanitary pads and menstrual cups; maternity clothing; and products for pumping breast milk.

Austin officials view the partnership as a stopgap measure as they try to fill the city’s more than 200 police vacancies.

Texas easily leads the nation in oil and gas production, and the Lone Star State is also a top player in renewable energy.
