A Texas prosecutor says a criminal investigation into police failures during the Uvalde school shooting will continue into 2024

The Department of Public Safety for 18 months has blocked the release of its investigation of the shooting, and it could choose to appeal this latest ruling, too.

This is the second time the mayor has taken legal action against the district attorney

The lawyers for some of the Uvalde families say there is “a compelling need” for records into the May 24 shooting at Robb Elementary to be publicly released.

The preliminary report has not been made public by either the district attorney’s office or the state. The Texas Rangers are conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting at Robb Elementary.

After the Texas Department of Public Safety suspended Texas Ranger Christopher Ryan Kindell, one of hundreds of officers who responded to the May 24 mass shooting, felony cases he investigated are in jeopardy and experts have questioned the justification for his suspension.

Parents, teachers, school staff and students who were on scene the day of the shooting are demanding redress for "the indelible and forever-lasting trauma" caused by the failures of law enforcement.

In a lawsuit filed Thursday, the city of Uvalde says the district attorney is restricting information needed by its independent investigator. Uvalde wants a judge to compel the prosecutor to hand over all relevant investigative information.

The inquiry will help determine whether criminal charges should be brought against responding officers.
