The tragedy unfolding in Israel and Gaza demands serious humanitarian action, not this pointless showing off, says Guardian columnist Simon Jenkins

Leaders of France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Britain and the United States have underscored their support for Israel and its right to defend itself during a video conference, but also urged it to adhere to international humanitarian law and protect civilians.

Not counting periodic cross-border skirmishes, Israel has fought three major wars against Hamas since withdrawing its forces from Gaza in 2005 – in 2008, 2014 and 2021. Each involved limited ground incursions, with Israeli soldiers in Gaza for about a fortnight.
