The four Polaris Dawn astronauts splashed down safely off the coast of Florida today (Sept. 15), bringing an end to their historic commercial mission.

After more than two years of training for the landmark mission, four citizens including billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman were launched into orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Florida on Tuesday. If all goes as planned, it will be the first time non-professional astronauts conduct a spacewalk.

SpaceX launched the four-person Polaris Dawn mission to orbit on Tuesday (Sept. 10) to carry out the first spacewalk ever performed by private astronauts.

Weather conditions at the mission's landing zones have postponed the Polaris Dawn launch, and also the FAA grounded the Falcon 9, so the crew might be waiting a minute.

SpaceX scrubbed the planned Aug. 28 launch of the Polaris Dawn astronaut mission due to bad weather. The mission now won't fly until Friday (Aug. 30) at the earliest.

The Polaris Dawn mission, organized by billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, was set to lift off early Tuesday from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, but is now targeting early Wednesday after a late technical hitch.
