Khao Kheow Open Zoo has issued a statement addressing concerns over the living conditions of baby pygmy hippo "Moo Deng" while announcing plans for a habitat expansion.
The zoo was responding to online debate about Moo Deng's enclosure following a post by social media personality and marine conservation advocate Siranudh Scott, also known as "Psi".
The zoo explained that marks visible in photos of Moo Deng's habitat were animal droppings -- a natural hippo behaviour used to mark territory. Officials said caretakers clean the enclosure every morning in accordance with international animal welfare standards.
The existing environment, which includes soil, mud and aquatic plants, was deliberately designed to maintain the high humidity hippos require for healthy skin and natural behaviour.
To further improve animal welfare, the zoo unveiled plans for "Hippo Village", a 10-rai expansion project approved to accommodate seven pygmy hippos and six common hippos.
The new habitat will offer larger, more natural spaces to reduce stress and enhance quality of life. Construction will be managed carefully to avoid disturbing Moo Deng and his mother, Jonah.
The zoo thanked the public for its concern and invited feedback via its official Facebook page or hotline.
The controversy began after Mr Scott posted on X that Moo Deng's enclosure appeared inadequate despite the animal's popularity and revenue-generating potential. The post attracted 3.9 million views, sparking debate over zoo animal welfare.
Mr Scott later clarified that he did not intend to criticise zoo caretakers but wanted to underscore the importance of ensuring that animals representing Thailand internationally are provided with appropriate living conditions.
