ZOHRAN Mamdani has won New York City's Democratic mayoral primary in a shock result.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old state lawmaker, is a self-described socialist who ran a campaign focused on the cost of living.
In videos which went viral on social media, he set out his vision for free buses, free childcare, new apartments and a higher minimum wage, which he said would be paid for by new taxes on the rich.

Mamdani gained popularity with younger voters in particular, partly due to his position on Israel's war on Gaza, having previously described Israel's brutal assault on the enclave as genocide.
The result of the primary is likely to determine who becomes mayor when voters head to the polls in November.
If elected, Mamdani would be New York's first Muslim and Indian mayor.
The primary result is a blow for former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who was attempting to make a political comeback after a sexual harassment scandal.
While he had been a firm favourite throughout the race because of his experience, Mamdani had won the support of the party's progressive wing.
Current mayor Eric Adams is set to run as an independent following backlash over his indictment on corruption charges.
Cuomo confirmed he has conceded to his Democratic rival, as he told supporters in a speech that Mamdani had "won" the primary race and that "we are going to take a look and make some decisions".
"Tonight is his night," Cuomo added.
Voters turned out during a heatwave to have their say, as temperatures in New York exceeded 37C.
