'Ziyech will be part of the solution' - National media react to Chelsea's 4-0 win over Krasnodar

Mail

"You would understand if Frank Lampard was having flashbacks on Wednesday night. It was almost like old times," writes Sami Mokbel for the Mail. "Roman Abramovich was watching Chelsea storm to victory in Europe... in front of supporters.

"Like it always used to be, Lampard may have been pondering. If Chelsea's defence continues in this vein then storming to victory will not be a problem.

"Callum Hudson-Odoi got the ball rolling before Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic put the gloss on an excellent victory for the Blues.

"But it was Chelsea's fourth clean sheet in five games - and their third on the spin - that had Lampard clenching his fists.

"Even without the effervescent Thiago Silva, the Londoners didn't concede as Lampard provided further evidence that, despite his relative inexperience, he does possess the acumen to be a success at the highest level.

"As is often the case in the Champions League, patience was a virtue for Chelsea."

Telegraph

"Frank Lampard will be hoping that actions speak louder than words after Roman Abramovich made a personal check on the progress of Chelsea and the £220 million summer investment he financed," writes Matt Law for the Telegraph.

"Two of those summers signings, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, got on the scoresheet in what eventually turned into a comfortable win following a dazzling substitute's appearance from Christian Pulisic.

"Lampard missed the chance to speak personally ahead of the game with Chelsea owner Abramovich but will hope that a Champions League success and the impact of the club’s new signings will have done the talking for him.

"Other than the goals from Werner and Ziyech, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and left-back Ben Chilwell helped Chelsea keep a third successive clean sheet, while Kai Havertz produced an encouraging performance.

"Abramovich had not been seen at a Chelsea game since July 2019, shortly after Lampard had taken over as head coach, and used the club’s first trip to his native Russia for seven years to get a rare first-hand glimpse of the team."

Independent

"Frank Lampard hasn’t needed to rush Hakim Ziyech back to action, thanks to a glut of attacking midfielders in his squad," writes Karl Matchett for the Independent.

"The former Ajax man has been slowly integrated into the side, with sub appearances and infrequent starts, and has gradually started to look like the more threatening, creative player we all know he is.

"Here he showed why he’s such a threat: from any attacking angle he can make space, evade a tackle and get shots away - he managed five in his 80 minutes on the pitch, four hitting the target and one ending in the back of the net.

"Last season a big issue for the Blues was a lack of clinical edge, but Ziyech will be part of the solution which ensures that shouldn’t be a problem over the longer term in 2020/21."

Mirror

"Chelsea delivered a commanding Champions League performance to seal an emphatic 4-0 win at Krasnodar," writes Nick Purewal for the Mirror. "Callum Hudson-Odoi, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic all found the net as the Blues eased to their first Group E victory in Russia.

"Regular penalty-taker Jorginho missed his second spot-kick of the campaign though, wrong-footing goalkeeper Matvei Safonov with his trademark skip-step run-up - only to scuff the ball against the post as he attempted to give Chelsea the lead.

"Jorginho had just been substituted with 15 minutes to play when Chelsea won a second penalty in the match.

"And with the Italy midfielder off the field, Germany hitman Werner seized control and rifled the ball into the net, in a dead-ball style in complete contrast with Jorginho's approach.

"Jorginho's trademark technique was unerring for eight penalties in a row, but so far this term the 28-year-old has missed twice and scored three times from the spot."
